Will is completely deaf. He is not hard or slight of hearing; he cannot hear anything at all. He was not born deaf, and therefore retains the memory and ability to talk, but he does not do so regularly, as he finds it thoroughly exhausting. He tends to communicate by reading lips, sign language and simply writing passages down onto a notepad which he carries with him at all times, for his own ease. Despite his deafness and age, Will is not an easy target. He is exceptionally good at reading vague vibrations, the reactions of others, and his eyes, to distinguish when an individual is coming into his midst. He is not without weakness, however, as any permanently deaf person would not be.
His deafness was noise-induced; Will is a war veteran. During his time at war, he was exposed to a few crates of gunpowder which, although he escaped unscathed sans the loss of his right leg, left him without any hearing, due to his close proximity to, and the type of, explosion.
RIGHT LEG:
Will's lower right leg was lost in the same explosion that his hearing was. It had since been replaced by a clockwork, copper-alloy limb which functions on cogs and wires, but has no individual movement without the encouragement of his right thigh and knee. For this reason, he walks with a permanent limp and had difficultly running and making swift movements. For this reason, he stays very clear of the arena.
